Funder: American Diabetes Association, Inc and Michigan Mental Health Integration Partnership (MIP)
Michigan Men’s Diabetes Project III: Mind & Motion (MenD III) is a 30-week randomized control trial in a sample of 80 Black men with Type 2 Diabetes and Depression, with the objective of culturally adapting and evaluating a virtually-delivered exercise and CBT intervention for Black men with type 2 diabetes, as well as 8 group discussion sessions that will serve as on-going support.

Michigan Men's Diabetes Project 2 (MenDII):
Diabetes Peer Leader Intervention
Funder: National Institutes of Health, Department of-Health and Human Services and Sunlife Assurance Company of Canada
Michigan Men’s Diabetes Project 2 (MenDII) is an 18-month, pilot randomized clinical trial (RCT) to further understand the feasibility and acceptability of a Peer-Led DSMS and Diabetes Education intervention adapted for Black men with T2D. This study focuses on the use of Black male peers as leaders and adaptation of a peer led diabetes self-management support intervention for Black men with diabetes. All participants of this study will be offered 10-hours of diabetes self-management education (DSME) facilitated by a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist. Followed by this, those in the control arm will receive 6 months of monthly 90-minute DSMS groups sessions led by two Peer Leaders (PL), with oversight from the CDCES.
MenDII data collection will conclude January 2025.

Diabetes Peer Leader Intervention
Funder: Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center, and Michigan Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation
Michigan Men’s Diabetes Project (MenD) is a 9-month pilot randomized control trial that will assess the acceptability and feasibility of peer-led virtual diabetes self-management education and support for older black men living with type 2 diabetes in the metro Detroit area. All participants of this study will be offered 10-hours of diabetes self-management education (DSME) facilitated by a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist. Participants randomized to the intervention arm of this study will have Peer Leaders (PLs) co-facilitating the DSME sessions and will also receive 6-hours of peer-led diabetes self-management support (DSMS). Peer leaders are trained community members that support others with their diabetes self-management by providing assistance with goal setting, problem-solving, as well as social and emotional support. The long-term goal of our research is to determine the most effective, practical, and sustainable approach to provide diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) to older Black men.
Online Diabetes Education Project (ODEP):
Virtual Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support Intervention
Funder: Michigan Mental Health Integration Partnership (MIP)
Online Diabetes Education Project (ODEP) is a 6-month pilot randomized control trial that aims to evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of a virtual diabetes self-management education (DSME) program. Participants of this study are adults with type 2 diabetes who self-identify as Black or African American and live in Detroit, MI and utilize services at a federally qualified health center. Participants randomized to the intervention arm of the study will be offered 10-hours of DSME via Zoom with a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist. The long-term goal of our research is to determine the most effective, practical, and sustainable approaches to provide virtual DSME to increase accessibility in clinical and non-clinical settings.
